Award named in honor of 2010 race champion Sally Meyerhoff; Sheri Piers to take part in April 3 event with nearly 8,000 expected
NEW YORK – (March 25, 2011) – The champion of the 2011 More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon on Sunday, April 3 will receive the inaugural "Meyerhoff" award, it was announced by New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg.
Sally Meyerhoff, the 2010 champion of the race, died on March 8 in a cycling accident near her home in Maricopa, AZ. She was 27. Known for her fiery red hair, often in pigtail braids and her running skirts, Meyerhoff was a favorite of participants and spectators alike. Meyerhoff was scheduled to defend her title in this year’s More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon.
"Our thoughts are with Sally Meyerhoff’s family," said Wittenberg. "She was part of ours at NYRR."
Meyerhoff, an NYRR member, won four local events in 2010. At last year’s More Magazine | Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon, she outran 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials winner Colleen De Reuck to set an event record of 1 hour, 14 minutes, 40 seconds despite bitter cold and rain. The Duke grad also won last year’s Bronx Half-Marathon, Percy Sutton Harlem 5K and Henry Isola XC Classic. The two-time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier finished 27th in the ING New York City Marathon 2010 in 2:41:00.
Sheri Piers, 39, of Falmouth, ME, will be the top entrant in the event, with a half-marathon personal best of 1:14:27, which she set just this past Sunday, March 20, at the NYC Half. A late bloomer as a professional runner, Piers is also a two-time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier. She finished 16th in the 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials in Boston in a time of 2:38:46, and lowered her time to a personal best of 2:37:04 at the 2009 Boston Marathon.
Joining Piers will be the United States Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, talk show host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and almost 8,000 women from across the country. The race will begin on West Drive at 63rd Street, inside Central Park. It will make two full, counterclockwise loops of the park. On the third loop, runners will enter the 72nd Street Transverse from the East Drive to the finish line. The race begins at 8:00am.
